Fifty-seven Police officers, on Friday, December 4, completed UN courses at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

At least 43 of them completed the 'pre-deployment training for Formed Police Unit (FPU). These are commanders, who will head Formed Police Unit One-Six (FPU1-6) contingent set to be deployed under the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) rotation. Fourteen others completed the ‘Introductory Training of Trainers.’

The course was conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

The pre-deployment course intended yo familiarize the participants with the UN standards as well as the conduct of UN personnel during the mission.

The ToT, on the other hand, acquainted participants with safety rules and maneuvers in a UN mission.

While officially closing the course, the Commandant of PTS, Commissioner of Police (CP) Robert Niyonshuti said that it was designed to further improve and contribute to the capacity and performance of the officers in their routine peacekeeping operations.

“Cooperation is important to exchange knowledge, skills and attitude required in addressing challenges to peace and security whenever necessary,” CP Niyonshuti said.

He added: “One of the RNP choices is to professionalize our law enforcement officers to bring change in other places where there is threat to peace, and to protect civilians affected by conflicts.”

The two courses covered the overview of UN, community policing, human rights and protection of civilians, different legal systems and equipment familiarization, among others.

The Commandant challenged the trainees to utilize the acquired skills in the name of peace and for the benefit of the people under their protection in peacekeeping mission.
