Found money returned to owner

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Monday, November 23, handed back the money, which was found by a Police officer on duty, to the rightful owner.

The owner, Claudine Uwizeyimana misplaced it on November 12, along KCC-Remera road where it was found by a Police officer, who was nearby on duty.

Uwizeyimana, shortly after receiving the money handed over by the RNP spokesperson, CP John Bosco Kabera, said that she had just been paid and withdrew the money to pay school fees for her children and to clear other urgent bills.

"That very morning, I had received my monthly salary, so I withdrew almost all of it to pay school fees, pay domestic workers, buy foodstuff and other essential neccesities, and to clear some urgent bills," said the mother of three.

She took a moto from Kacyiru heading to Kimironko to first pay school fees in the bank.

"As we reached at Gisementi, I could not find the envelope that contained the money. We rode back hoping that at least I could find it but the search yielded to nothing.

It was one of those worst days for me. I told friends, called at school to bear with me but again I envisaged a hard life ahead...how we would survive until the next salary."

The next day, on November 13, Uwizeyimana met a friend, who asked her if she had found the money.

"A friend asked me because she had seen the Police notice calling for anyone, who could have lost the money, to come and pick it. She showed me the notice, all the signs like time and the road where it was found; it all indicated that this was my money. I provided all the details to the Police, what was in the envelope including some particulars, which corresponded.

You cannot imagine how happy I am today, I thank God. Police is there to ensure the safety of people and their property, and this Police officer, who found my money stood by those values," said Uwizeyimana.

CP Kabera said that Uwizeyimana provided all the details and evidence, beyond doubt.

"When the officer found the money, he immediately reported it to his superiors. He did what was required of him as an ethical and professional Police officer, but what he did is also a commendable and exemplary gesture," CP Kabera said.

He, however, appealed to the general public to always report to the Police or any other concerned entity, whenever they lose anything.

"Uwizeyimana had not reported the incident, she just told friends. It is advisable to report such incidents to relevant institutions because it makes it easy when your valuables are found and you come to claim them," CP Kabera said.
