Five suspected impersonators arrested in operations against fraudsters

Police in City of Kigali arrested five people belonging to the same ring, who were allegedly guising as officials from various institutions, threatening and defrauding unwitting targeted members of the public.

The five suspects were shown to the media on Tuesday, October 13, at Police Metropolitan Headquarters in Remera.

The quintet is suspected to have threatened and defrauded one Olivier Mayira, an entrepreneur and owner of Multi-Engineering and Construction Company (MECC) with offices in Kicukiro District, of over Rwf1 million. Read more

Police arrest three trafficking polythene bags into Rwanda

Rwanda National Police (RNP) arrested three people in Nyagatare and Rubavu districts, who were trafficking the outlawed non-biodegradable plastic bags into Rwanda.

They were arrested separately on Thursday, October 15, with five sacks of polythene bags.

Two of the suspects; Olivier Niyonsenga, 20, and Etienne Twizerimana, 21, were intercepted in Kamahoro Village, Cyembogo Cell of Matimba Sector in Nyagatare District transporting four sacks of the banned products on two motorcycles.

The motorcycles used in the alleged crime; RD 914W, which was being ridden by Niyonsenga and RD 374Q ridden by Twizerimana, were also impounded. Read more

Eight taxi-moto operators arrested over stealth number plates

Rwanda National Police (RNP) arrested eight commercial motorcyclists in City of Kigali in operations against stealth plate numbers. Their motorcycles were also impounded.

The suspects, who were paraded to the media at the Police Metropolitan Headquarters in Remera, on Tuesday, October 13, include those who had erected aerial objects on plate numbers; those who erased the red coat on plates as well as those, who bent the plates; all with intention to obscure visibility, especially when a traffic offence is committed or when the motorcycle is used in unlawful acts.

Rwanda National Police spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera said that four of the impounded motorcycles were implicated in traffic and criminal offences more than a year ago. Read more

Illicit brew producer arrested in Nyabihu

Rwanda National Police (RNP)'s continued fight against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances saw the arrest of one Protais Nsanzimana, 38, in Nyabihu District for operating an illegal distillery and producing illicit brew.

Nsanzimana, a resident of Rugera sector, Nyarutembe cell in Kirebe village was arrested on October 15, with 1980 litres of illicit brew, some hidden in the house and others in the nearby pigpen. Read more

Rusizi: 250 rolls of smuggled electric cables, liquors seized

Police in Rusizi District impounded 250 rolls of electric cables and three cartons of Jameson that were being smuggled into the country.

The cables, which were concealed in seven sacks as well as the liquors, were intercepted on Sunday, October 11, from six suspected smugglers in Kamarebe Village, Gahinga Cell of Mururu Sector. Read more

MUSANZE: Priests caught holding services contrary to COVID-19 prevention directives

On Sunday, October 11, Police and local leaders conducted an inspection in various churches in the Northern region, which were permitted to hold religious services in the region, to assess their compliance.

Countrywide, in the Northern region in particular, majority churches have continued to follow the recommended safety guidelines during their respective services.

Out of 72 churches that were inspected in Musanze, Gakenke, Gicumbi and Burera districts, only one--Ruhengeri Cathedral--was found holding services contrary to the directives; it was simply a chaotic situation... everyone there was at high risk of infection, according to ACP Reverien Rugwizangoga, the Nothern Region Police Commander. Illicit brew producer arrested in Gatsibo

On Monday, October 12, Police in Rugarama Sector of Gatsibo District arrested one Jean Damascene Habimana, 40, who was running an illegal distillery, producing and supplying illicit drinks.

Habimana was arrested at his illegal plant located in Rugarama Sector where 417 bottles of the illicit drink called Akeza K'ibimera, were seized. Read more

Trio arrested in Rubavu over drug dealing

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), on Saturday, October 10, arrested three suspected drug dealers in Terimbere cell of Nyundo Sector, Rubavu District.

The suspected drug dealers were caught with over 1,800 pellets of cannabis, combined.

They are Fidele Niyonzima, 25, who was found in possession of 301 pellets of cannabis, while the duo of Console Niragire, 31, and Liliane Ntagisanimana, 30, were caught with 1,500 pellets. Read more

Rubavu: Narcotics retailer, abusers arrested

As part of the increased operations to fight drug related crimes, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) has arrested a suspected major retailer and six abusers in Rubavu District.

They were arrested on Wednesday, October 14, in separate targeted operations carried out in Kanzenze and Gisenyi sectors.

From Kanzenze, one Therese Nyirambabazi, 28, a suspected major retailer in the area, was arrested with 650 rolls of cannabis.

Six others were arrested in Bugoyi Cell of Gisenyi Sector, where they were at the time found smoking cannabis. Read more
