Handball Championship: Police starts on high note

The National Handball Championship kicked off this Sunday with the reigning champions—Police Handball Club—defeating Nyakabanda 33-19 in their opening game played at Kimisagara Youth Centre.

The first half 16-9 score in favour of Police with more 17-10 added after the break guided the seven-time record champions to a flying start.

Fidele Hagenimana and CPL Jean Baptiste Habimana scored five goals each while Zacharie Tuyishime put his name on the score sheet four times.

“A win in your first match is always important as it boosts morale of players ahead of other matches in the competition,” Police coach, Inspector of Police (IP) Antoine Ntabanganyimana, said.

He thanked the players and the support given to the club by the mother institution, Rwanda National Police (RNP).

In this 2020 National Handball championship season, Police was placed in the Southern zone alongside Ecole Secondaire Kigoma, UR-CASS, Munyove HC from Rusizi District and Nyakabanda HC from Kigali.

The next match for Police HC will be against ES Kigoma on February 29.

The Eastern zone includes APR, Gicumbi, ADEGI Gituza, UR-Rukara and ES Kabarondo.
