Football: Police beat Gicumbi to keep chase

A lone goal against Gicumbi scored by striker Justin Mico was enough for Police Football Club to secure three points on Day 18 of Rwanda Premier League on Sunday.

Mico scored in the 70th minute and the law enforcers salvaged on it to the last whistle to keep chasing the top slot.

The win at Mumena stadium brought the law enforcers, who are currently placed third on the table standings with 37 points, to within a point behind second-placed Rayon Sports, who thrashed Espoir FC 3-0 on Saturday; and five behind table leaders APR, who were held to 1-all draw by Etincelles.

Police played without strikers; Antoine Dominique Ndayishimiye, the club’s top-scorer so far this season with seven goals, and Jean Paul Uwimbabazi, both with foot injuries.

Ndayishimiye and Uwimbabazi have been out for the last three and two weeks, respectively.

“Of course the absence of Ndayishimiye and Uwimbabazi is affecting the club in one way or another, and they are sidelined for the next two to three weeks,” said Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Karangwa, Police FC secretary-general and spokesperson.

Skipper Aimable Nsabimana and his co-central defender Omar Musa received their third yellow card during the match against Gicumbi, meaning they will also be suspended for the next match.

Police FC will be battling for a positive start when they meet Rayon Sports this coming weekend in the opening match of this year’s Heroes Cup football tournament at Kigali Stadium.
The annual Heroes Cup tournament is contested by teams that comprised top four of the previous Rwanda Premier League season. This year’s four teams are; APR, Rayon Sports, Mukura and Police
