Nyagatare: Man arrested over money counterfeit

Police in Nyagatare District have arrested a man identified as Emmanuel Gatabazi, 37, who was found circulating counterfeit money.

Gatabazi was at the time artested with counterfeit notes amounting to Rwf40, 000.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson of Eastern region, the suspect was arrested on Friday in Mimuli Sector while trying to send counterfeits worth Rwf40, 000 via Mobile Money.

“The suspect was arrested due to a tip-off from the Mobile Money agent, who after realizing that Rwf40, 000 Gatabazi gave him was counterfeit, immediately called for Police," said CIP Twizeyimana.

"Gatabazi had seven counterfeit notes of Rwf5, 000 notes and five others in the denominations of Rwf1,000.”

CIP Twizeyimana noted that currency counterfeiting is a crime that poses threat to a country’s economy and a source of financial loss to victims.

“By providing timely information to Police, the Mobile Money agent enabled police to intervene on time and apprehend the suspect and to prevent the loss. We call for vigilance, thoroughly verify the money you receive and always be quick to report; give no room for such criminal tendencies.”

According to article 269 of the penal code, anyone convicted of counterfeit, falsification or alteration of currency or monetary signs, faces an imprisonment term of between five and seven years.
