Separate Police operations conducted on Thursday led to the arrest of five suspected dealers in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. They were apprehended in operations conducted in the districts of Nyamagabe, Ruhango and Gasabo.

Two of the suspects; Nsanzimana Nuru, 39, and Daniel Muhire, 42, were arrested in Kitabi and Tare, respectively, in Nyamagabe with quantities of cannabis. Nsanzimana is a suspected major supplier of cannabis.

In Ruhango District, Police, local leaders and DASSO arrested one Janvière Niyonteze, 57, who distills Kanyanga, a banned crude gin.

Also seized from Niyonteze are raw materials and equipment she was using to distill the illicit gin as well as 30 litres of kanyanga that she had already distilled.

Other suspected drug
dealers, a couple identified as Spesiose Nyiraminani and her husband Emile Bucyibaruta were arrested in Gisozi Sector, Gasabo District with 308 pellets of cannabis.

The duo handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) Gisozi station was apprehended in an operation conducted by the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU).

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie-Gorette Umutesi said that the couple was arrested following information from members of the public, who knew their “criminal dealings.”

“The role of the public through information sharing continues to play massive impact and facilitating ANU operations, especially against major dealers and breaking chains of supply,” said CIP Umutesi.
