Kicukiro: Police cracks down on night gangs

Two men suspected to have been ambushing people at night and violently robbing them of their valuables were arrested on Friday in separate operations conducted in Masaka and Gatenga sectors of Kicukiro District.

The Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie-Gorette Umutesi identified the duo as Vital Itangishaka, 24, apprehended in Masaka on Friday and Cyprien Musabirema, 29, arrested at Rwandex in Karambo Cell, Gatenga on Thursday.

"On January 3, a commercial cyclist in Masaka called Jean Pierre Muhawenimana was ambushed at night, stabbed on the neck and his bicycle stolen," CIP Umutesi said.

Muhawenimana is still nursing the wound.

"Police, on Friday, received information from other commercial cyclists, who suspected Itangishaka to be behind the attack on Muhawenimana and stealing his bicycle. Indeed, at the time of his arrest, Itangishaka was found with the same bicycle which was stolen from Muhawenimana," CIP Umutesi explained.

Itangishaka, who also admitted to attacking and injuring Muhawenimana, said that he was using the bicycle in commercial activities.

On Musabirema, there were several complaints from victims, who named him as their attacker at night in Rwandex and robbing them of their valuables.

"The operation has been going on to locate and arrest Musabirema until he was apprehended on Thursday night on the same spot in Rwandex where he ambushes people and steals their belongings," said the spokesperson.

"We have information about three other people who are part of Musabirema's ring, and we are looking for them."

She urged the public to always provide information on places used by criminals to ambush people and individuals they suspect to be involved, to facilitate Police operations.
