Three suspected major drug dealers arrested

Separate Police operations conducted on Wednesday in Rubavu and Rwamagara districts led to the arrest of a man and two women suspected to be major drug dealers.

They were arrested with combined 6,800 pellets of cannabis. The operations were conducted by the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Anti-Narcotics Unit.

One of the suspects; Donatha Ingabire, 38, was arrested in Rubavu, Rugerero Sector with 5000 rolls of cannabis.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said Ingabire was on the list of suspected major drug traffickers.

“ANU had information about Ingabire’s criminal business, and the operation was based on information that she had brought a new consignment of narcotics from the DR Congo. Indeed, when they searched her house, they recovered 5000 pellets, she was immediately taken into custody and handed over to RIB,” he explained.

Two other suspects, Assouma Uwimana, 47, and Jean Semuganza, 29, were arrested in Rwamagana, Kigabiro Sector with 1850 pellets of cannabis.

“Uwimana’s name has been mentioned many times by some of cannabis retailers arrested previously, as their supplier. It was a matter of time before she’s arrested in the act with exhibits,” said CIP Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region.

Police called for strengthened cooperation and increased ownership to fight narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances through information sharing on dealers and retailers to facilitate the ongoing operations designed to break chains of supply.

Last week, ANU arrested two other drug dealers in Nyarugenge and Nyanza districts with combined 10,200 pellets of cannabis.
