[PHOTOS]: RNP participates in EAC Armed Forces Command Post Exercise ‘Ushirikiano Imara’

Rwanda National Police (RNP) is taking part in the 12th East African Community Armed Forces Command Post Exercise (CPX) codenamed ‘Ushirikiano Imara 2019’, which started on November 7, at Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability (URDC) Centre in Jinja-Uganda.

The two-week Exercise brings together Armed Forces, police personnel and civilians from Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and the host, Uganda.

Some 65 security personnel from Rwanda, including eight senior Police officers are part of the 360 security personnel combined in six contingents participating in the Command Post Exercise held under the theme: “Promoting Peace, Security and Stability.”


The Exercise is aimed at enhancing the readiness against dynamic security challenges within the region and beyond. It is designed to boost regional capacity in joint planning and addressing regional security challenges through joint operations such as counter piracy operations, counter terrorism, disaster management as well as participation in Peace Support Operations and use of media in promoting safety and peace.



“These joint training efforts are meant to enhance the capabilities of the EAC partner States’ Defence Forces to combat complex security challenges,” Exercise Director, Maj. Gen. Sam Kavuma, said.

Col. Gerald Butera, who spoke on behalf of the EAC Secretary General, Amb Liberat Mfumukeko said that the EAC Defence Forces have gone beyond exercises and are operating together in several missions such as the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the United Nations/ African Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
