Transporters urged to facilitate students returning from school

Public transport agencies are called upon to facilitate safe return of students, who will be breaking off for third term holidays next week.

The Ministry of Education released a roadmap for end of third term and guidelines for each district.

Under the Ministry's guidelines, schools in Huye, Gisagara, Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru, all in the Southern Province, will break-off on November 5.

All schools from the districts of Nyanza, Ruhango, Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Nyarugenge, Kicukiro and Gasabo will depart on November 6.

November 7 is reserved for schools from Muhanga, Kamonyi, Karongi, Rutsiro, Ngororero, Rubavu and Nyabihu.

All schools from the Northern and Eastern provinces will close on November 8.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Rafiki Mujiji, the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety department, reminded public transport agencies commuting to these districts to take this into account and give priority to students to "arrive home early and safely."

"This shouldn't mean breaking road safety rules and regulations to overload or speed in order to make many routes so as to make much money," CP Mujiji warned.

"These guidelines are meant to bring order and safety during such period when movements and the traffic flow tend to increase, to prevent risky scramble for passengers and to help these young people to return home safe."

He urged drivers to regulate their speed, park in appropriate and safe places and avoid tampering with the speed governor device.

CP Mujiji further called upon schools to work with transporters to ensure safe boarding of students.

All students are also required to dawn in school uniform for easy and quick identification.

As students will be going home for their holidays, those in Senior Three and Six will stay back for their national exams, and CP Mujiji urged public transport agencies to also facilitate them when they complete their exams.
