Students urged to abstain from drug abuse

Yesterday 21st Sept, Rwanda National police launched an anti drug and HIV campaign in schools in Nyanza District .This campaign started with march from a place commonly known as ku Bigega to the Nyanza District stadium accompanied by Police Band.
The countrywide campaign against drugs and aids will cover all schools in the country. According to statistical source, youths are the most vulnerable group in terms of drug dealing and consumption which later leads them to contraction of HIV.
The guest of honor was the State Minister in the Ministry of Education Dr Harebamungu Mathias who urged the students to abstain from drugs and early sexual intercourse and focus on their studies. In related development increasing sexual intercourse among the youth is more prevalent among uneducated young people.

The commissioner for operations and public order in Rwanda National Police ACP Emmanuel Butera said that students who engage in drug abuse ends up failing in their studies and many times constitute a security threats to the communities.Butera encouraged the students to abstain from that vice and instead make future projections.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and ICT Rose Mary Mbabazi said that the Ministry has laid down different programs that facilitates the youth in job creation and income generating. She further said that different rehabilitation Centers that accommodates drug users and those who sometimes drop out schools were constructed and that has produced positive results. In different plays acted by the students it reflected the dangers resulting from use of drugs that leads to contracting HIV- AIDS.
The launching ceremony put together many partners related to youth elsewhere, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth, Rwanda National Police, RDF and Government officials. The event put together more than ten thousand students from different schools in Nyanza District.
