Police-public partnership against drug abuse

Police in Rubavu arrested two women on September 19, 2012 in possession with bulky pellets of cannabis, commonly known as Marijuana in Gisenyi Sector.
As the fight against drugs continues in the town of Gisenyi through patrols as well as cordon and searches, the duo named as 34 year-old Uwimana Solange and 23 year old Grace Uwimana were arrested with 11,290 pellets and 3000 pellets of cannabis respectively.
Solange was arrested after crossing the border from neighbouring DR Congo enroute to Ruhango District while Grace was apprehended while on motorcycle at Nyundo Centre taking the cannabis to Mahoko center.
The pair is being held at Rubavu Police Station.
The District Police Commander, Superintendent Felix Bizimana applauded the good existing partnership between the public and security organs, saying that it helped in fighting crimes in the area through timely information sharing.
“The importance of cooperation in crime fighting has paid off a lot and it is good that even the public have found the need to cooperate with Police to completely restrain out this dangerous habit,”
He urged the public to maintain a vigilant eye and report any drug dealing or trafficking to Police and other security organs.
In a related development, Police in Kicukiro district, Kicukiro cell, Kicukiro sector arrested 22-year old Alphonse Nyangiyiki with 48 pellets of cannabis on Tuesday. He is being held at Kicukiro Police station.
Rwanda National Police (RNP) is urging the public to enhance their participation in ensuring security by providing information about criminal activities especially drug dealing and consuming to Police and other security organs timely.
Police sternly warns citizens engaged in consuming, selling and distribution of narcotics that they will never escape the punishments as stipulated by law.
Police praises the Rwandan public for the continued support in availing or informing the security authorities on populace involved in drug trafficking as well as their beneficiaries.
These criminals are causing serious hindrances to the development of our country.
